In a game against the Dolphins, Daniel Jones, the Giants’ quarterback, left the field prematurely during the fourth quarter after a sack by Andrew Van Ginkel. This marked the sixth time he was brought down during the game, summing up to 28 sacks in just five games, a challenging situation due to a struggling offensive line.
Initially, there was hope that Jones would be available, but he will miss at least one game. The Giants’ coach mentioned that the team is taking things day by day in response to Jones’ injury.
Notably, Daniel Jones recently signed a lucrative four-year, $160 million contract extension in March, making him one of the top 10 highest-paid players in his position. This contract followed a season where Jones led New York to nine victories and a playoff spot while achieving personal bests in passing yards, completion rate, and Quarterback Rating.
In contrast to his prior performance, Jones has only thrown two touchdowns in five games this season, with six interceptions, surpassing last season’s total of five interceptions.
Initial concerns about a prolonged absence due to Jones’ neck injury appear to have been alleviated. Both the coach and Jones have not disclosed specific details about the nature of the injury, but Jones clarified that it is distinct from his 2021 injury, which led to a disk issue and a six-game absence.
While Jones initially aimed to play on Sunday night, he ultimately didn’t. However, this indicates a potential swift return to the field.
In Daniel Jones’ absence, Taylor, a seasoned NFL quarterback, will make his 54th career start on Sunday. Most of his starts (43 out of 54) occurred during his time with the Bills from 2015-2017. Taylor’s record as Buffalo’s starting quarterback stands at 22-20, boasting a 51-16 touchdown-to-interception ratio. He earned Pro Bowl honors in 2015 and 2017 and guided the Bills to their first playoff appearance in nearly two decades.
After being drafted by the Bills in 2018, Taylor played for multiple teams. The 34-year-old last started a game in 2021 with the Houston Texans, having started six times that year.
Unfortunately, Daniel Jones is not the only player sidelined due to injury. Several other Giants players have been ruled out as well:
In addition, starting right tackle Evan Neal (ankle) and tight end Darren Waller (groin) are questionable for the upcoming game.
Another notable player on the injury list is Pro Bowl running back Saquon Barkley. He has missed the past three games due to a high ankle sprain. The team expressed hope that Barkley is getting closer to returning, as he participated in limited practice sessions during the week and is listed as questionable for the upcoming game.
Barkley mentioned dealing with ankle pain while making cuts, but he remains optimistic about his recovery, observing positive trends in recent weeks.
The Giants (3-2) will face the Bills in an evening showdown, scheduled for 8:20 p.m. ET on Sunday. The game will be broadcast on NBC as part of Sunday Night Football, with Mike Tirico providing play-by-play commentary and Cris Collinsworth serving as the analyst.
