Introduction to the NFL Supplemental Draft
On July 11, 2023, the NFL held the supplemental draft after a three-year hiatus. Unfortunately, neither of the eligible wide receivers, Malachi Wideman from Jackson State and Milton Wright from Purdue, were selected. Both players are now free agents and can sign with any NFL team.
Milton Wright: College Career and Eligibility
Milton Wright, a wide receiver from Purdue, became academically ineligible before the 2022 college season. After entering the transfer portal in April, he was approved for the 2023 supplemental draft. Throughout his three seasons with the Boilermakers, Wright displayed impressive stats, including 99 receptions for 1,325 yards and 10 touchdowns. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Wright has scheduled multiple workouts for the upcoming training camp.
Malachi Wideman: College Journey and Performance
Malachi Wideman, initially recruited by the Tennessee Volunteers, had limited playtime in 2020 before transferring to Jackson State. In the 2021 season, he scored 12 touchdowns but faced ineligibility for a portion of the 2022 season. Wideman’s performance in six games included three receptions for 49 yards and one touchdown. Tom Pelissero mentions that Wideman also has workouts scheduled for training camp.
Understanding the NFL Supplemental Draft Process
The NFL supplemental draft provides an opportunity for players who were not part of the regular draft to join the upcoming season. It accommodates players whose collegiate eligibility changed or ended after the regular draft deadline due to academic, personal conduct, or other reasons. Teams participate in a silent auction, bidding on players they are interested in. If a team’s bid is unmatched, they acquire the player, surrendering their corresponding pick in the following year’s NFL draft. Multiple bids for the same player are resolved based on the bidding round and team priority. Unselected players become unrestricted free agents.
