The NFL’s season opener on Thursday night turned out to be a gritty affair, with the Kansas City Chiefs falling short against the Detroit Lions, marking the dawn of a new football year.
One glaring absence was Patrick Mahomes’ favorite target, Travis Kelce, who was sidelined due to a bone bruise sustained during practice just days before the game. This absence was palpable as the Chiefs struggled with dropped passes throughout the match, allowing the Lions to capitalize.
The fourth quarter witnessed Detroit mounting a comeback, led by quarterback Jared Goff. Goff unleashed a precision throw to Josh Reynolds, connecting for 33 crucial yards, setting the stage for a red-zone opportunity with the Lions trailing 20-14.
Two plays later, David Montgomery, making his debut in a Lions uniform, powered through for an eight-yard touchdown, giving his team a one-point lead at 21-20. The Lions’ revamped defense, much improved during the offseason, then stepped up, making key stops to stifle the Chiefs’ response and forcing a punt.
In an unexpected move, head coach Dan Campbell decided to go for it on the subsequent drive, despite falling short of a first down. However, the defense rose to the occasion again, effectively sealing the victory for Detroit.
Typically, a late-game scenario with Mahomes at the helm and only minutes left would favor the Chiefs. However, the supporting cast let Mahomes down on this night. The Chiefs’ most disastrous drive saw Kadarius Toney drop yet another pass, his third of the game. This time, it resulted in an interception returned for a touchdown by Brian Branch in the first half. A series of penalties and more drops ultimately doomed the drive, allowing the Lions to take control and secure the win.
Goff’s final stats for the game were 22-of-35 for 253 yards, including one touchdown pass.
The second drive of the Lions’ season resulted in the NFL’s first touchdown of the year. Starting from their nine-yard line, Goff led the Lions on a 14-play drive, culminating in Amon-Ra St. Brown’s nine-yard catch-and-run touchdown.
Mahomes and the Chiefs responded swiftly with a lengthy drive of their own, covering 75 yards and resulting in Rashee Rice’s first career touchdown. Rice, a second-round pick from SMU, made an impact for Kansas City.
The Lions seemed poised to regain their lead in the second quarter, but a fumble by Marvin Jones Jr. halted their drive on the Chiefs’ 14-yard line, marking the first turnover of the season.
Mahomes displayed his two-minute mastery at the end of the first half, launching a 34-yard pass down the middle to Marquez Valdes-Scantling. Despite a heavy hit, Valdes-Scantling held onto the ball, extending the drive and ultimately leading to a four-yard touchdown pass to tight end Blake Bell.
The Chiefs appeared to have momentum early in the second half when they forced a quick three-and-out by the Lions. However, Toney’s dropped pass found its way into Brian Branch’s waiting hand for another interception returned for a touchdown.
For the Lions, Montgomery finished with 74 rushing yards on 21 carries, while rookie Jahmyr Gibbs showcased his speed and agility with 42 rushing yards and 18 receiving yards. St. Brown led the Lions in receptions with six catches for 71 yards, and Reynolds contributed 80 receiving yards.
Mahomes completed 21 of 39 passes for 226 yards and two touchdowns, along with the lone interception.
