The commencement of each new NFL season ushers in a fresh perspective, rekindled optimism, and aspirations for the future. However, transformations can transpire with astonishing speed. After just three weeks of the 2023 season, a handful of teams have fallen short of their anticipated performance.
The notion of underperformance can be quite subjective, particularly in this assessment, which is predominantly founded on preseason expectations. For instance, the Carolina Panthers’ winless 0-3 start and the New York Giants’ offensive struggles en route to a 1-2 record come as no shock.
It’s important to consider relativity as well; the Chicago Bears and Cincinnati Bengals may not be held to the same standards, but both have been disappointing in their own ways thus far in the season.
Wins may not have been expected in abundance for the Chicago Bears, but a degree of competence was certainly hoped for. With high hopes for Justin Fields, who showed promise at the end of the 2022 season, and several cost-effective offseason moves, the Bears seemed poised for improvement on paper. However, in the first three weeks, the Bears have performed more like a junior varsity NFL team. They suffered a humiliating 38-20 loss to the Green Bay Packers, managed a mere 236 yards in a 27-17 defeat against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and were trounced 41-10 by the Kansas City Chiefs. To make matters worse, the Denver Broncos, fresh off a 50-point loss, opened as favorites against the Bears. Add the departure of defensive coordinator Alan Williams and the controversy surrounding Fields’ coaching inquiries, and the Bears are in disarray. The initial hope of seven wins now seems like a distant dream.
The Denver Broncos started the 2023 season with losses to the Las Vegas Raiders and Washington Commanders, which was disappointing but not entirely unexpected. However, giving up a total of 70 points in those two games has shattered any optimism of imminent progress. DraftKings initially set the Broncos’ win total at 8.5, but that number has now plummeted to 5.5, the lowest in the AFC West. While the Broncos have upcoming games against the Chicago Bears and the New York Jets, their challenging schedule includes matchups with the Chiefs and Packers. Denver’s postseason aspirations are already looking like a distant hope.
The New York Jets’ season took a hit when Aaron Rodgers suffered a season-ending Achilles injury after just four snaps. With Rodgers gone, the Jets’ chances of achieving meaningful success diminished significantly. However, their struggles extend beyond Rodgers’ absence. Zach Wilson’s passing performance has been lackluster, and the rushing attack has been unimpressive. Although the defense had a standout performance against the Bills, it faltered in subsequent losses to the Cowboys and Patriots. The Jets’ upcoming games against the Chiefs and Eagles don’t offer much relief.
The Cincinnati Bengals’ 0-2 start to the 2023 season wasn’t initially cause for panic, but concerns arose when their offense struggled against the Browns and Ravens. Joe Burrow’s passing numbers were subpar, and Ja’Marr Chase had a slow start. While the Bengals secured a victory against the Rams in Week 3, it was not a convincing win. Burrow’s limited performance due to a calf injury and the team’s overall offensive struggles are causes for concern. Despite their talent, a lackluster offense could hold the Bengals back.
Expectations for the Minnesota Vikings were tempered after their record-setting 11-0 performance in one-score games the previous season. However, their 2023 campaign has been a disappointment. They suffered losses to Tampa, Philadelphia, and the Los Angeles Chargers, with Kirk
